Parade Jurnalistik (ParJur) is a national scale competition under the auspices of Epicentrum, held by the Department of Journalism, Faculty of Communication Sciences, Universitas Padjadjaran. This competition is intended for undergraduate or equivalent students who are interested in the field of journalism to produce works that are actual, factual, and have an impact on society. This year’s Parade Jurnalistik raised the theme of "The Forgotten Voices: How Structural Poverty Perpetuates Violence and Struggle in Urban Society" to highlight works that amplify the voices of the voiceless and highlight cases that are often overlooked.
Poverty is a complex issue that affects various social aspects, including economy, health, and education. Natural resources are abundant but people cannot enjoy these natural riches (structural poverty) and government policies influence the poverty that prevails in society. Government policies play a role in determining the prevailing poverty level in society. However, the poverty standards applied in Indonesia are still considered too low and do not match the real conditions, which shows how problematic the government’s views on the problem. Structural poverty is also commonly associated with public policies in terms of social and cultural aspects, which can lead to crime. These crimes tend to have a greater impact on vulnerable or marginalized groups and are more prevalent in urban areas due to significant groups. This crime is widespread in urban areas due to significant social inequality.
Studies show that external factors, such as poorly maintained social and physical environments in large heterogeneous cities could create high social pressures. These pressures can influence negative behavior and encourage criminal activity.
In an effort to survive, some individuals with economic problems, burden, and limitations could end up resorting to all means to fulfill their needs, including but not limited to theft, fraud, robbery, and various other crimes that violate the law.
Ideally, journalistic works will report recurring problems in the society, thus raising the awareness and empathy of the public to the related issues. While it is true, it is important to know that not every kind of journalism could be as effective as the others. In the case of Parjur 2025’s theme, feature news and in-depth news would be effective. The feature news could evoke public emotion and empathy, while in-depth news could raise comprehensive understanding for the problems.
As an output, each participating team will create a feature article in text form, which will be a requirement to become a participant for Parade Jurnalistik 2025. The work must raise issues related to the theme of the Parade Jurnalistik 2025, namely "The Forgotten Voices: How Structural Poverty Perpetuates Violence and Struggle in Urban Society." Participants are expected to compose feature articles thoroughly with existing facts without any exploitation. Then, participants who pass the first round will continue to the next stage by making in-depth video reporting. Finalists are required to conduct in-depth coverage of how structural poverty perpetuates violence in urban communities. At the peak of the event, the Finalists presented the results of the In-Depth Video Reporting that had been created, which would then be assessed by the Jury. We encourage the reporting of crimes and violence that take place in the digital space or that are rarely covered by the media.
